An abdominal ultrasound is used to assess the organs in theupper and lower abdomen including the liver, spleen, kidneys and gallbladder. Your doctor might request an ultrasound of the abdomen to investigate pain,bloating, and tenderness or follow up on abnormal blood test results.

How do I prepare foran abdominal ultrasound?

An ultrasound of the abdomen requires a 6-8 hour fast. Thisincludes water, chewing gum, and smoking. If you are a diabetic please contactus for further information regarding your fasting requirements.

A renal ultrasound (kidneys) requires a full bladder. Youwill need to drink 750ml of water 1 hour prior to your appointment and holdyour bladder.

What happens duringan abdominal ultrasound?

For an abdominal ultrasound you will not be required toremove any clothing. Gel will be applied to the skin in the abdominal regionand a transducer will be placed on the skin gently to examine the abdominalorgans.
